June 10, 2022 by: Roger Stenbock W1RMS

Mosquito’s annual amateur radio “Field day” will again be held at the Swansboro airport Saturday, June 25th from 10am to 3pm. The event will be hosted at the hanger area adjacent to the south east area of the airport. HAM Radio operators will be setting up remote radio stations at the airport hangers to participate in the yearly nationwide “Field day” event. This event allows HAM Radio operators across the country to brush up on their off-grid radio skills as though there was a local emergency. We are Inviting all amateur radio operators to join in and anyone interested in the hobby. Lunch will be provided. Contact Rob Kirkpatrick at 530-622-7147 for more information.

Kids having a great time at ham radio “Field day”

Field Day is ham radio’s open house. Every June, more than 40,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio’s science, skill and service to our communities and our nation.

It is also a lot of fun for the kids. This is a great event to bring your children to exposed them to the hobby. There are many aspects to the hobby and we will try to answer all questions you may have.

Emergency Commutations preparedness practice.  It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933, and remains the most popular event in ham radio.

Worldwide participations. Field Day is an annual amateur radio exercise, widely sponsored by IARU regions and member organizations, encouraging emergency communications preparedness among amateur radio operators. In the United States, it is typically the largest single emergency preparedness exercise in the country, with over 30,000 operators participating each year. Field Day is always the fourth full weekend of June, beginning at 18:00 UTC Saturday and running through 20:59 UTC Sunday.

Since the first ARRL Field Day in 1933, radio amateurs throughout North America have practiced the rapid deployment of radio communications equipment in environments ranging from operations under tents in remote areas to operations inside Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs). Operations using emergency and alternative power sources are highly encouraged, since electricity and other public infrastructures are often among the first to fail during a natural disaster or severe weather.

To determine the effectiveness of the exercise and of each participant’s operations, there is an integrated competitive component, and many clubs also engage in concurrent leisure activities (e.g., camping, cookouts). Operations typically last a continuous twenty-four hours, requiring scheduled relief operators to keep stations on the air. Additional contest points are awarded for experimenting with unusual modes, making contacts via satellite, and involving youth in the activity.
