While doing some work at our airport this afternoon, I witnessed our fire department in action. Coincidently, I watched the helicopter as it was landing at the Swansboro airport. About two hours later the Mosquito fire chief reported “today that Mosquito firefighters were dispatched to a medical/rescue emergency near a remote part of Swansboro Road today at 11:23am. Engine 275 with three personnel arrived at 11:33am to find a 13 year old female who had been thrown from her ATV and was 200 feet down an embankment. Firefighters assessed and began treatment of injuries and prepared her for transport. Air ambulance Cal Star 3 was dispatched.

The patient was secured to a back board and carried up hill to the road to meet paramedics. Cal Star 3 landed at the Swansboro Airport at 11:42am. The flight paramedic and nurse were transported by Support Group personnel from the airport and arrived to the patient at the same time as County Fire Medic ambulance 25. The flight crew took over patient care with advanced life support treatment for serious injuries. All were transported by Medic 25 to the waiting helicopter.
Cal Star 3 lifted off to UC Davis Medical Center at 12:16pm. Total time from dispatch of the incident to helicopter lift off to the trauma center was 43 minutes. We appreciate our staff and partnering agencies working together with skill and efficiency for our Community.“
Later that day I attended today’s special MFPD budget meeting. I was impressed just how well the Board’s interacted with Chief Rosevear. There was no drama as they worked through the complexities of the budget, just positive productivity. I also acquired a new appreciation as to how much our fire department does for our community – given the limited funding available to it. Hats off to the board and the fire department. It was an eye opening meeting. The attendance was low. I wished more community members would attend. Besides myself, only the financial committee member attended. I encourage all MFPD members to attend the next MFPD meeting this coming Thursday June 23rd at 7PM.
