September 4th Swansboro California
By Tom Harris and Roger Stenbock
Saturday September 3rd was HOT: The weather was in the 90’s, the Mosquito Firefighters put on a Chili Cook-off at Dyer Lake that attracted more than 12 chili chefs, and local aircraft and automobile enthusiasts brought out their hot planes and hot rods for display at Swansboro Airport.

Thanks and kudos go out to Mosquito Firefighter Scott Reiman for all his efforts in organizing the cook-off. Also thanks and kudos to Swansboro pilots Kim Purcell and Dennis Janca for their efforts in organizing the aircraft and auto displays. This is the third Big Boy Toy Show in Mosquito. The first two were organized by then-fire chief Bob Davis and the firefighters around ten years ago.
Chili entrants began setting up in the Dyer Lake Pavilion around 7:30 AM. Festivities began at Noon with Aerobatic champion Julie Clark flying overhead in her beautiful T-34 with trailing smoke on. Her friend followed her in a beautiful Beechcraft Bonanza. There were over a dozen aircraft on display, with most of them based at Swansboro airport. The Hot Rods, antiques and classic autos were spread around the hangar area. Thanks to Roger Stenbock for permitting this display on his property.

Judging by comments on local social media our community had a great time. Here are just a couple of comments:
“What a great day at the chili cook-off. The chili was amazing by all. “The planes all lined up on the tie downs were beautiful. It was great to see people take their planes out of the hangers and display them. You don’t know really how many pilots are up here until you see this. The car display was so cool to see a lot of those as well. What a great community and look everyone got along.”

Lots of folks posted comments and pictures, here is another comment:

“This was a wonderful event! Great to see our neighbors again and meet new folks. BIG Thank you to the MFPD and it’s volunteers – and especially Mosquito volunteer fire fighter Scott Reiman for all your work and pulling together this community event so quickly and smoothly. You are a jewel in this community. Also, thank you to Kim Purcell and the Swansboro Pilot’s Association for supporting the event with the airplane displays (and the awesome flyovers!), as well as those individuals from Placerville, Mosquito and Swansboro communities who brought out their treasured cars for us to enjoy! And to all the chili cook off contestants: thank you for drawing us out of our houses to sample your creative chili and toppings. Picking a favorite was darn near impossible, even with seconds. Somehow the day didn’t seem nearly as hot as the chili! Looking forward to next year’s event”
