If you haven’t voted yet, now is the time to do it. There is just on week left. It is important for all members to participate in this election to have a say in the outcome and ensure that the SCPOA is serving its members to the best of its ability. If you have already cast your vote, please disregard this message.
This op-ed underscores the importance of the upcoming election for the Swansboro Country Property Owners Association (SCPOA). With less than 20 percent of members historically voting, it is crucial that the rest of the membership participates in order to have their say in the outcome of the election. Time is running out, and the deadline for submitting votes is fast approaching, so it is more important than ever for members to cast their ballots. Your vote counts, so don’t let this opportunity to have your voice heard pass you by. Act quickly to make sure that your vote is counted and help our board resume serving our association in the best interest of its members.

This year SCPOA is facing a number of significant challenges, which have the potential to impact the community if they are not addressed effectively. Despite the current volunteer board members’ hard work and accomplishments, there have been a number of missteps. These resulted in unwanted outcomes, including excessive spending, ignoring members’ concerns, feuding with the pilot association, creating a contentious relationship with the fire department, not following the open meeting Davis Stirling laws, and incumbent candidates proposing spending more money. These issues have all contributed to division within the community.
In addition to candidates representing the incumbent board members, and one independent candidate, four new candidates, David Dudley, Melissa Stever, Meredith Blain, and Karen Paul, are running for the board. These new candidates are running on a platform of responsible fiscal spending and transparency as their primary goal to address these challenges. This annual election, to be held on February 25th, 2023, provides an opportunity for the members of the community to vote for candidates who prioritize responsible and transparent leadership. You may want to consider these issues when making your voting selection:
- Excessive spending: Uncontrolled spending can have a negative impact on the financial stability of the association and could result in increased assessments or fees for members in the future. To address this issue, members can ask for a detailed budget to be provided by the association and attend meetings to ensure that spending is being done in a responsible and transparent manner.
- Listening to members’ concerns: If members’ concerns are not addressed, it can lead to a lack of trust in the association’s leadership and contribute to division within the community. To address this issue, members can raise their concerns at meetings, write letters to the association’s leadership, or seek the assistance of an outside mediator.
- Differences with the pilot association: Strained relationships with other organizations and groups in the community can have a negative impact on the community as a whole. To address this issue, members can encourage the association to work with the pilot association to resolve any conflicts and find common ground.
- Relationship with the fire department: A contentious relationship with our fire department is counterproductive. The community’s safety is of utmost importance, and the association must work closely with the fire department to ensure the well-being of all residents. To address this issue, members can encourage the association to work with the fire department and seek their input on any safety-related issues.
- Following the open meeting Davis-Stirling laws: The association has a responsibility to follow the law and not following the open meeting Davis-Stirling laws could result in legal consequences. To address this issue, members can ask for the association to follow the open meeting Davis-Stirling laws, attend meetings to ensure that the laws are being followed, and seek the assistance of an outside mediator if necessary.
- Incumbent candidate’s plan to spend more money: If the association continues to propose spending more money without proper planning or budgeting, it could result in the community being faced with steep assessments or increased fees in the future. To address this issue, members can attend meetings, ask for a detailed budget to be provided by the association, and support candidates who are running on a platform of responsible fiscal spending and transparency.
