Perspective and Opinion by Tom Harris

The purpose of this article is to publicly inform all dues-paying residents of the Swansboro Country Property Owners Association (SCPOA) of matters of interest to our community.

Board president Karen Paul directed the meeting.  Roll call indicated four directors in attendance.  Megan Lattanner and Derek Trimble were absent. Highlights of the meeting included the announcement of the resignation of board member Luz Brown.  Ms Brown resigned due to being overcommitted to serving community members who needed help.  President Paul thanked Luz for her service to SCPOA and the community.

In order to fill the vacancy, SCPOA president Karen Paul nominated Rob Kirkpatrick.  Her motion was seconded and the board voted and approved the appointment of Mr. Kirkpatrick, 4 – 0.  Ms Paul pointed out that experience was key in her decision to add a member to fill out Ms Brown’s term for the next six months.  Ms Paul noted that the people who ran in the last election have not participated in board meetings or committees since the election.  On the other hand, Rob served on the previous board, and continued to serve on the Architectural Review committee.  In addition, Rob also serves on the Roads committee and Common Area committee, and has attended almost all SCPOA board meetings since being elected in February 2021.

Rob adds a wealth of knowledge, history and experience to the present board.

His knowledge and experience was instrumental in separating fact from fiction regarding the status of the airport operating permit.  Rob knows that the Swansboro airport is a valuable asset of SCPOA and of the community.   His nomination and appointment follows the precedent set by previous boards after a member of the board resigned.

The use of Zoom at board meetings is under discussion by the Communications committee and is unresolved.  Readers will recall that the Zoom meetings were a product of the COVID “crisis”.  Put in context, the Sentinel points out that Zoom was not accessed by very many members during the Covid pandemic.  In fact, along with the lockdowns, mandatory masks, tests requiring sticking a Q-tip up one’s nose, and multiple vaccine shots, Zoom meetings are one more symptom we may want to forget.

The board will continue to hold meetings at the Mosquito Fire Station.  Chief Rosevear has extended his welcome to allow this, and the board is appreciative.

Editor’s note:

The stated goal of the majority of board members is to apply due process, follow existing rules, and bring concerned dues-payers in to the decision making process by listening to and respecting their views.  Independent thinkers will often disagree on some issues, but agree that negotiation, not intimidation, is the path forward.

The next SCPOA board meeting is scheduled for July 18th at the Fire Station.
