Spring is a busy time in Mosquito this year. Saturday, May 18, was the annual MVFA Yard Sale held at the fire station. The same day also saw the opening of our local café, “Smoke on the Water” on Finnon Lake, formerly Frank’s Diner. Both events provided lots of time to mingle with family and friends. Thanks go out to Trent Williams and the MVFA volunteers who provided a lot of time and effort to make both these events happen. Kudos to Kirk and Matt, who have been working tirelessly to bring the café up to today’s high standards.

And speaking of high standards, Finnon Lake Campground has won third place in Hipcamp’s award for best campground in the U.S. – yes, the entire COUNTRY. Based on your 2023 bookings, reviews, and ratings, you’ve been named one of the best campgrounds in the country! The present board of directors of MVFA deserves all the credit for this, for all the hard work they put into the lake, campground, and café. The board is continuing the work begun when the Mosquito Volunteer Fire Department bought the Finnon Lake property back in 1997 from the state of California. Since then, MVFA restored the dam, rebuilt the campground and day-use area, and brought electricity to the bathrooms. MVFA volunteers have provided time, effort, and often their own money to make Finnon the fabulous place it is.
The next event scheduled for this Spring is the MVFA Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, June 15. There is a $10 donation requested at the door, and kids 10 and under eat free. The MVFA Spaghetti Dinner is one of the longest-running events of our Mosquito community, and gives residents yet another opportunity to mingle with their friends and neighbors.
On the first day of summer, June 22, SCPOA, MFPD District Auxiliary (D’Ax), and the Swansboro Pilots’ Association (SPA) will host the “Swansboro Drive & Fly-In” for Swansboro residents and their guests. Formerly known as the “Big Boy Toy Show,” this event will feature local hot-rods, classic autos, and motorcycles, as well as showcase some of our local aircraft. There is a $10 entry fee for autos and motorcycles, and all proceeds will benefit the Mosquito Fire Department.
