Swansboro Drive & Fly-in: A Day to Remember!

June 22, 2024, was an unforgettable day at Swansboro Airport and Dyer Lake Park for the first-ever Swansboro Drive & Fly-in, formerly known as the Big Boy Toy Show. The weather was sizzling, but the vehicles were even hotter! From a vintage camper towed by a classic Chevy station wagon to two stunning 1960s convertibles—a Ford and a Mercury—the lineup was absolutely star-studded. We even had a hand-made racing moped/motorcycle that looked like a vintage board-track racer, among 16 incredible entries. Best of show was awarded to the vintage camper towed by a classic Chevy station wagon.

But wait, there’s more! Seventeen magnificent aircraft were on display, many proudly owned by our Swansboro neighbors. Some of these planes were even hand-built right here in Swansboro. Proceeds from the show supported the MFPD District Auxiliary (D’Ax), adding a layer of community spirit to the fun-filled event.

The “Hydration station” provided welcome relief from the heat

Huge thanks to the Swansboro Country Property Owners Association (SCPOA) board for letting us use the airfield and park, Chief Rosevear and the fire department for having an engine on standby, and the MFPD (D’Ax) for the delicious popcorn, refreshing shaved ice, and awesome freebies for the kids. We also had face painting, balloon animals, Wani’s delicious tacos, and MVFA Crafters selling fantastic 4th of July goodies and swag.

The event also coincided with the annual ARRL “field day” weekend, so local ham radio operators Ron Kirkpatrick (KI6HNA) and Roger Stenbock (W1RMS) set up portable stations. They answered questions, made several QSO’s (radio contacts), and even had a notable contact with the Reagan Library amateur radio station. Roger set up his rig for an old-fashioned Morse code demonstration using the CW (continuous wave) mode. –. — -.. / -… .-.. . … … / .- — . .-. .. -.-. .-

A heartfelt thank you to all the residents and friends who braved the heat to enjoy the show. Your presence made the day extra special, and we can’t wait for next year’s event! We might shift the date for cooler weather, so stay tuned. Swansboro residents, start prepping those hot rods, vintage cars, and motorcycles—we can’t wait to see them next year!–

And don’t forget, we’ve got another fantastic community event at Finnon Lake later this summer. Stay excited, Swansboro!
